According to the Balinese people, Tanah Lot temple was built by a brahmin named Danghyang Niratha who had been wandering from the island of Java. He succeeded in strengthening the confidence of the majority of Balinese on the teachings of Hinduism in the 16th century. However, when he was on a mission, Bendesa Beraban felt jealous and wanted to drive Danghyang Niratha from his meditation place.

Because expelled, Danghyang Niratha had issued a miracle to move the big rock. So, Tanah Lot temple is believed to be created from the spiritual power of Danghyang Niratha who moved the big boulders into the middle of the beach and became his meditation place.

After the stone was successfully moved, a temple was built and guarded by a temple guard created from Denghyang Niratha's policewinder. Then the shawl was converted into a sea horse commonly called "Lipi Poleng" (black and white snake).
